Hassan

Overview

Hassan: The Pious Cross-road of Karnataka

Shaped by the legacy of two great dynasties that once ruled Karnataka — the Western Ganga Dynasty of Talakad and the Hoysala Empire — the city of Hassan is named after the presiding deity Goddess Hasanamba. This relaxed and quaint town is one of Karnataka’s all-time favourite destinations. As the state’s fourth-largest city, Hassan is primarily a farming and trading centre.

Hassan served as a significant seat of power for the Hoysala Empire, which ruled large parts of southern India between the 11th and 13th centuries. The Hoysalas built around 50 remarkable temples and sculptures, many of which are now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Following are the main attractions of Hassan:

Hasanamba Temple: The centuries-old Hasanamba Temple is the major attraction in Hassan. Dedicated to the smiling Goddess Hasanamba, it opens to devotees only once a year, for a week in October. During this period, a grand Jatra (fair) is also held. According to legend, seven divine mothers who once lived in Varanasi arrived here many centuries ago, enchanted by the beauty of the place, and decided to remain forever.

Gorur Dam: Located about 22 km from the town, this scenic dam is built across the Hemavathy River. It is an ideal spot for picnics and family outings and is home to the ancient temples of Paravasudeva and Yoganarasimha. As one of Karnataka’s largest reservoirs, Gorur Dam has an appealing charm of its own.

Chandragiri HillChandragiri Hill: Named after the great King Chandragupta Maurya, this vast hill was earlier known as Kalbappu. Situated at an elevation of around 3,049 feet above sea level, its history dates back to 300 B.C. Chandragiri is home to several important Jain monuments and houses the tomb of Bhadrabahu Muni along with shrines dedicated to other revered Jain sages.

Bisle Ghat: Considered one of the most picturesque locations in Karnataka, Bisle Ghat has earned the title of ‘heaven on earth’. Located on the borders of Hassan district, it offers an excellent viewpoint overlooking three stunning mountain ranges — Yenikallu Betta, Doddabetta, and Kumaraparvatha. Dense forests, diverse wildlife, and beautiful waterfalls enhance the charm of this scenic destination.

Excursions from Hassan: Travellers can also explore nearby destinations such as Mosale (14 km), Halebid (27 km), and Shravanabelagola (51 km).

Shopping in Hassan: Ivory items, silk sarees, and sandalwood sculptures are some of the most popular souvenirs to buy in Hassan.

Hasanamba Temple FestivalBest time to visit: Hassan is best visited between October and March, when the weather is pleasant. Visiting during the Hasanamba Temple Festival (October) is especially rewarding due to the vibrant festivities.
