Kovalam

Overview

Kovalam: The Beach Town of Kerala

Lauded for its sun, sand, beaches, and Ayurvedic salons, Kovalam is truly a paradise in South India. Located 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, Kovalam boasts some of the sunniest and most picturesque beaches in Kerala. Its crescent-shaped beaches made Kovalam a major attraction for European tourists as early as the 1930s.

The charm of Kovalam’s serene beaches first caught attention when the Regent Maharani of Travancore, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, built the first beach resort here in the 1920s. Over time, the town gained popularity for its pristine blue beaches and panoramic views. The King of Travancore further promoted Kovalam by inviting his European friends, solidifying the town’s reputation as a premier beach destination.

Following are the main attractions of Kovalam:

The Lighthouse Beach: Named after the 30m tall Vizhinjam Lighthouse, this beach stretches along the Malabar Coast of Kerala. Located in the southern part of Kovalam, the lighthouse features 142 stairs and 12 ladders, providing a stunning panoramic view. Visitors can see the coastal village of Poovar and the Beemapalli Mosque from the top. Adventure seekers can enjoy para-gliding, swimming, and other water sports here. The lighthouse is open from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Hawa BeachHawa Beach: Also called Eves Beach, Hawa Beach is Kovalam’s main fishing hub. Unlike Lighthouse Beach, it is less crowded, making it ideal for visitors seeking tranquility. This beach was once known as India’s first topless beach, although topless bathing is no longer permitted. The beach is also a great spot to observe migratory birds and local wildlife.

Ashoka Beach: Named after the Ashoka Hotel, this beach has a religious significance as well. The Koval Jama Masjid and Ganapathi Temple are located nearby and can be visited during a trip to Ashoka Beach.

Surfing, Snorkeling, and Ayurvedic Massage: The rising waves along Kovalam’s beaches make it a perfect spot for surfing. Visitors can also try snorkeling at Eves Beach to explore the underwater world. After a day full of water sports and fun, you can relax with a soothing Ayurvedic massage offered by nearby salons.
