Srisailam: South India's Historic Temple Town

Nestled on the Nallamala Hills along the River Krishna, Srisailam is a sacred mountain town in Andhra Pradesh. Known by various names such as Srigiri, Siridhan, Sirigiri, Srinagam, and Sriparvatha, it has been revered by Saivite pilgrims for centuries. The town’s history is closely linked with the Sathavahanas, the early rulers of South India. The Pulumavis Nasik inscription, dating back to the 1st century AD, first mentions Srisailam.

The Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples and preserves a sacred heritage. The Chenchu tribe were the original worshippers of Goddess Bhramarambha. The golden age of Srisailam was witnessed during the era of the Reddy Kings. Historically, the temple also saw the practice of Veeracharam, where devotees performed acts of self-mortification as penance.
