Marmagao

Overview

Marmagao: The Natural Port of Goa

One of the three principal cities of modern-day Goa, Marmagao (locally known as Mormugao) is a sub-district in South Goa. Marmagao Tourism gained popularity after being featured in the 1980 movie The Sea Wolves. Established as a major port in 1963, Marmagao has played a significant role in India’s maritime trade.

Historically, Marmagao faced invasions by the Dutch, Portuguese, and the Sultans of Bijapur. In 1683, the Portuguese in Goa were threatened by the Marathas. The Maratha ruler Sambhaji rushed to defend his kingdom from Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, preventing the city’s decline. Following this, the Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Francisco de Tavora, shifted the capital of Portuguese holdings in India to Marmagao’s formidable fortress. However, his successors later moved the headquarters to Panaji, finding Marmagao too secluded.
