Overview
Uttar Pradesh is a state in India known for its rich mythological heritage and sacred pilgrim sites. It has the highest population among Indian states and shares borders with New Delhi, Nepal, Bihar, and Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand was part of Uttar Pradesh before separating a decade ago.
Owing to its cultural heritage and numerous Hindu pilgrim sites, the state is also known as the Cow Belt/Hindu Belt of India. Uttar Pradesh finds mention in the Vedic Age and is linked to mythological legends such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Jainism and Buddhism also gained prominence here. The site of Lord Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana is located in the state.
While agriculture is predominant, the state is one of India’s top grain producers. Temperatures range from 4–41°C. The state is known for its educational institutes and universities. The sacred River Ganges flows through Varanasi, attracting countless tourists.

Lucknow
The state capital, famous for colonial-era architecture. Major attractions include the Bara Imambara (built in 1784) and local Lucknawi/Mughal delicacies.
Varanasi (Banaras)
One of the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi is the abode of Lord Shiva. The Ganges flows through the city, and a dip in its waters is believed to cleanse sins and lead to moksha.
Sarnath
This is where Lord Buddha first preached his teachings. It is a significant pilgrimage spot for Buddhists.
Mathura & Vrindavan
Believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the area features beautiful temples, decorations, folk music, and dance, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Allahabad
Home to the world-famous Kumbh Mela, one of the four major pilgrimage sites. The festival occurs every 12 years, drawing massive crowds.
Agra
Known worldwide for the Taj Mahal, Agra is rich in architectural marvels such as Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort.
