Gyalshing: The Hotspot of Rhododendrons

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart.” - Helen Keller

GyalshingThere is no better expression to describe the beauty of Gyalshing than these timeless words by Helen Keller. You can see or touch the mountains and monasteries, but only your heart can truly feel the beauty reflected in the simplicity and warmth of its people.

While every part of Sikkim is soaked in natural charm, Gyalshing in West Sikkim holds a unique allure of its own. It is the capital of West Sikkim district and is famous for its abundance of rhododendrons. Nestled amidst the towering Mount Kanchenjunga and surrounded by pine and fir forests, it serves as a perfect summer holiday destination.

Travel to Gyalshing to explore ancient monasteries, rolling hills, lush forests, waterfalls, and serene lakes. Nature enthusiasts can wander through the vast Rhododendron Sanctuary and marvel at its blossoms in full bloom.

The word 'Gyalshing' translates to 'King's Garden.' Historically, this area served as a royal garden attached to the Rabdentse Palace until the late 18th century. Just a short distance away lies Yuksom, the ancient capital of Sikkim established in 1642.

Besides trekking, mountain climbing, and nature walks, travelers can relish delicious local dishes made from salmon and trout and enjoy birdwatching in the tranquil surroundings.

Following are the main tourist attractions of Gyalshing:

Sanga Choeling Monastery
Built in 1695 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, this monastery is considered the second oldest monastery in Sikkim. The name 'Sanga Choeling' literally means 'Island of the Guhyamantra Teachings.' The monastery has been rebuilt several times after being damaged by fire.

The monastery houses clay statues dating back to the 17th century. Its walls are adorned with exquisite paintings and murals depicting saints, drummers, mythical figures, and the Wheel of Life.

On the 10th day of every Tibetan month, lamas chant sacred hymns at the monastery. Visiting in the morning offers a truly spiritual experience as lamas gather in the main hall for prayers, creating a serene and soul-soothing atmosphere.

Perched at an altitude of about 12,000 ft and spread across 104 sq. km, the sanctuary is home to exotic animals like the red panda and Himalayan black bear. The forests of oak, magnolia, pine, fir, and other alpine trees further add to its natural splendor.

Yangtey
Yangtey is a picturesque viewpoint that offers stunning panoramas of Kanchenjunga. This small hamlet, located about 106 km from Gangtok, also provides mesmerizing views of peaks such as Frey, Pandim, Narsing, and Rathong.

During the monsoon, the area feels like a walk through clouds — the misty weather adding a touch of romance. Nearby, you can visit the scenic Kanchenjunga and Rimbi Waterfalls.
